What is Rotary?

The History of Rotary                        The Founders of Rotary

Rotary is short for Rotary International - a world-wide organisation of over 25000 local clubs and 1.2m men and women members in business or the professions who provide humanitarian service to the community at local, national and international level. We encourage high ethical standards in all walks of life work for peace and goodwill in the world.

Rotary was founded, on the 23 February 1905, by a 37 year old attorney Paul P. Harris, in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.  For a history of Rotary click on link.

Rotary gives its members the opportunity to put something back into the community in recognition of what the community has given to those members in their path to success or achievement in their occupation.

Chelwood Bridge Rotary Club was formed about 13 years ago and are one of 1500 clubs in the UK. We are one of 52 clubs in Rotary District 1200 which covers Somerset, West Wiltshire and West Dorset. We meet for dinner most Tuesdays at the Carpenters Arms, Stanton Wick, near Bristol for an enjoyable evening of fellowship, conversation, discussion, planning of projects and often an interesting speaker. Visitors are always welcome, for location see our "About us" page.

To join one must be of good character and of a good business/professional reputation. One must also live or work in the locality and we prefer to recruit people between the ages of 30 and 55. People who have recently retired from a business or profession and who, but for their retirement, would have fulfilled the criteria set out above are also eligible for consideration. For further information please email our secretary  Adrian Miller.

What do we do?

Primarily we enjoy each others company. From this 'fellowship' comes Service and as we are a group of people with a wide range of interests and experience we are able to use our talents and skills to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Hence our main motto:

"SERVICE ABOVE SELF"
