With
the threat of more rain following the downpour that had already soaked
Camerton earlier in the day an intrepid group of four set off to walk
around Camerton.
Leading the way was Jerry
Coles with Lawrence Davies, and Steve and Linda Tanner to make up the
foursome. After a short loop around Camerton Old Pit batch we headed
due south with a steep uphill section across a front garden and
several fields.

On crossing
Paulton lane we met up with a local
beekeeper out to check his hives. A fund of knowledge enabled us
to pause and regain our breath before bidding adieu and heading
off along a field edge towards the reservoir above
Clandown |
. Skirting
a travellers camp Jerry lost his footing
tripping over a bramble and fortunately being able to gain support
from Lawrence saved him from landing in some human waste thoughtfully
deposited by a traveller. A gap in the hedge enabled us to look across
the hills to pick out Westbury cement works and the White Horse in the
far distance.
Crossing fields and through
Camerton farm brought us to the edge of the Cam valley and dropping
down and across to Whitebrook lane.
|
From there it was down to
the bottom of the valley and then a steep ascent again looping
around Bengrove wood, through
Sheephouse Farm before making our way
back to Jerry’s house.

A quick change there left us
smart and casual to enable us to tackle the large obstacle
known as lunch at the King William 4th Ale house in Tunley
where an excellent meal was had by all.
Despite several drops of rain
as a warning we were blessed with a dry walk throughout.
